- You mean most OLDER AT&T switches aren't capable of handling even V.FC speeds
- (let alone V.34 and 33.6); however, AT&T 5ESS switches (with the latest two
- firmware revisions) handle V.FC and faster beautifully. Case in point: I'm
- in the odd position of having a phone number that is shared BETWEEN two
- different central offices with different switches (the closest CO uses a 5RSM
- from Nortel, the other uses AT&T's 5ESS with the latest firmware) while my
- ISP's CO is another 5ESS (also with the latest firmware). If my call is
- routed from me via the two 5ESS switches, I CONSISTENTLY get 28800 PPP
- connections DESPITE my modem being V.FC and the ISP using V.34 (specifically,
- a Zoom V34X). However, if the 5RSM comes into play, the connection speed
- drops down to 24000 (or even 21600). Am I continuing to hope that my telco
- (Bell Atlantic) upgrades the other CO to a 5ESS? Believe it.
- (Fortunately, BA is in the process of upgrading all the COs to AT LEAST 5ESS
- capability.)
